This is a lovely devotional piece from France. The porcelain medallion has a hand painted image of Notre Dame de Hal or Our Lady of Hal. The image shows the famous statue of the Black Madonna of Hal, Belgium. Our Lady of Hal has been venerated since the 1200s and is accredited with many miracles, including saving the city from cannon fire in 1580. In this painting she is shown wearing a large crown and brightly colored gowns with a pile of cannonballs at her feet.
