This is a vintage portable devotional. The arched doors open to reveal an attractive Art Deco crucifix. The cross is wood with a lustrous finish, and the corpus is metal. The crucifix rests against red velvet, and the doors are lined in matching silk. The case is marked genuine leather made in France.
Example of a Prayer before a Crucifix: Behold, O good and most sweet Jesus, I fall upon my knees before Thee, and with most fervent desire beg and beseech Thee that Thou wouldst impress upon my heart a lively sense of faith, hope and charity, true repentance for my sins, and a firm resolve to make amends. And with deep affection and grief, I reflect upon Thy five wounds, having before my eyes that which Thy prophet David spoke about Thee, o good Jesus: "They have pierced my hands and feet, they have counted all my bones." Amen.
A plenary indulgence, under the usual conditions, may be gained by those who shall say this prayer with devotion before an image of our crucified Redeemer. A partial indulgence may also be gained for each devout recitation.

This is a wonderful antique crucifix. The corpus, INRI sign, and memento mori beneath Christ’s feet are also metal. The reverse has an elegant Crown of Thorns at the center of the cross. It is fairly heavy and would have been worn either as a pectoral cross or at the end of a monk’s or nun’s large rosary.
Skull & Crossbones
The skull at the base of the cross has several symbolic meanings: Christ’s victory over death; Christ as the New Adam crucified on Golgotha “the Place of the Skull” believed to be where Adam is buried; as well as a memento mori - a reminder of the Four Last Things: Death, Judgment, Heaven, and Hell.
This is an elegant vintage wall crucifix. It is a simple wood cross with a highly detailed corpus made of early hard plastic. Our Lord is shown stretched tight against the cross as He gazes toward heaven in sorrow. It is very moving.
