This is a fantastic antique religious painting. It is an image of Saint Martin of Tours in roman armor on horseback. He is shown cutting his cloak off with his sword to give to a poor beggar. Saint Martin is the patron saint of the poor, soldiers, conscientious objectors, tailors, and winemakers. Feast Day: November 11.
Reverse glass painting is an ancient folk art tradition of Bavaria. This piece is likely from the early turn of the century. The frame appears to be original but the backing is more recent.
