Saint Anthony German Monastery Wax Art

$110.00

This is a wonderful example of vintage devotional artwork. It is a wax figure of Saint Anthony holding a young Jesus. Saint Anthony is holding Christ on an open book while Our Lord is reaching up to hug the saint around the neck. It is very sweet.

The figure is decorated with Catholic symbols associated with Saint Anthony. The Christ Child represents a famous vision he had of Jesus. The book represents St. Anthony’s  reputation as a theologian and a teacher and the lilies represent purity. Saint Anthony's feast day is June 13.

The monasteries of Germany, particularly the region of Bavaria, are famous for devotional artwork, known as Klosterarbeiten, often incorporating traditional wax art.

This piece is believed to have been produced by nuns in Bavaria.  The wax art it housed in a shadowbox and decorated with metallic trim. The back has a personal note written in German.
