This is a fantastic antique religious painting. It is an image of Saint Veronica holding open her veil showing the image of the Face of Christ. The saint is painted as an older woman whose expression is that of great pain and sorrow.
Reverse glass painting is an ancient folk art tradition of Bavaria. This piece is likely from the early turn of the century. The backing is also beautifully painted and held in place with wooden pegs. Fantastic.
The Veil of Veronica:
Tradition relates that St. Veronica wiped the blood from Christ’s face as He carried His cross to Calvary. Our Lord’s visage was miraculously imprinted on her veil and it became an object of veneration. The Sixth Station of the Cross commemorates this moment.

This is a magnificent vintage religious devotional. It is a sculpted image of the Blessed Virgin Mary holding an infant Christ in her arms. Our Lady is wearing voluminous medieval style robes with a shorter veil over long hair. Christ Jesus is shown holding a dove in one hand, representing the Holy Spirit, and a loaf of bread in the other, representing the Holy Eucharist.
This piece has a matt finish with green patina highlighting the details. The reverse is painted gold and there are two holes to allow mounting.
